I-15 it's mrs. Logan I'm back to read another part of our book fractions equal trouble and I having a good day Wego chapter 2 at school on Monday Wilson hung his jacket and backpack on the coat rack and then went to say hi to split those squiggles went home with a different student every weekend last weekend squiggles had visited laurvick the smartest kid is a class floor could be a math tutor I hope you all you've all been thinking of ideas for science fair project mrs. Porter said to the class Wilson have noticed how often teachers sentences ended with exclamation marks he wondered if mrs. Porter really felt could see me constantly enthusiastic about Colorado history science fair projects and fractions she was pretending the way his parents are pretended to having a math tutor was wonderful not embarrassing at all is anyone ready to share his or her science fair question with the class room a science fair project begins with a question that you want to answer Josh's hand was the first in the air even before Laura's this is Porter look surprised. Josh waiting for and then cleared his throat to speak my question is at what temperature does explode Wilson could tell that Josh have expected the class to break thunderous Applause the kids is faces Wilson Could See Clearly impressed mrs. Porter's face showed no expression how do you plan to go about answering your question job teacher here's a picture of his teacher and you can see Josh in the background raising his hand very excitedly and procedure is one of those science words that we that we have talked about and then we will talk about again in the future I think I'll be in my think I'll put my pickle in the oven I'll check it at 300 degrees then at 400 degrees then at 5 100 degrees and keep going until it explodes and what's your hypothesis what is your educated guess about what you think is going to happen that's what I thought this is is in it and educated guess my hypothesis is that when it explodes it will make up the class last now class we need to talk about the importance of safety as you work on your science fair project Josh have you talked to your parents about this idea and what did they say about it they said I should get a different mrs. Porter smile looked relieved at the time only Wilson her Josh whisper and idea to share shut up fun kid wanted to see how long people could go without blinking another kid wanted to drop pieces of toast to see if toast really did always land on butter side down Laura's friend Rebecca Landry was going to bake cookies different ingredients to see what's ingredient was the most important Laura was going to do something complicated with magnets and batteries if any other kid had offered that idea Wilson would have known that the kids parents had bought the Lord good and science as good as she wasn't math and she could be a science tutor as well as a math tutor math tutor Wilson and all is forgotten he's jump down in his chair she was so has to have his first tutoring session with mrs. Tucker after school on Wednesday instead of doing cool things like going to Josh's house to play video games or make a pickle explode Wilton we be going to some Chinese lady's house to spend an hour chatting with her about fractions so many wonderful ideas mrs. Porter said now get out your math books it's time for math time for fractions Wilson attention during math if he can only learn how to do fractions by 3 on Wednesday afternoon he could tell his parents cats what I can do fractions now and send it to call mrs. Tucker and cancel the appointment but he kept drawing pictures on his math worksheet instead of pictures pip pictures of squiggles pictures of falling toast pictures of puffed-up pickles ready to pop tension not really maybe he would show the picture to his parents exchange glasses and then his mother would say I was going to grow up to be an artist needs to learn how to do fractions do you agree and his father would agree after all Michelangelo has been a very great artist Wilson and never heard that Michelangelo was good at fractions we know math has a part in art doesn't it mrs. Porter was saying something about numerators and denominators one of them was the number on top of the little line in a fraction and one of them was the number on the bottom how to say top and bottom numerators of two fractions are the same the fraction with the smaller denominator is a larger fraction mrs. Porter said will send you a pic eating a piece of toast to do squiggles eating a pickle really which fraction is larger 1 or 1/8 some of you quieter student he answered something to do with the numerator and the denominator with the top and the bottom but you which one was with take a moment think about which which one is larger 1/5 or 1/8 it was bigger than 5 that much will send you that the seeds me the number when the numerator is same but the denominators are different the smaller denominator is actually the bigger piece no mrs. Porter said but Wilson still didn't understand explain it a thousand times and Wilson still wouldn't understand Wilson had a better idea than Josh's for a science fair project was the best way to make a math book explode they have time to read one chapter 6 chapter 3 after school Wilson that keeper outside the kindergarten room so they can walk home together kippers shattered as he saw Wilson Wilson's drug in the mood for gassy especially if the gas had anything to do with pet Captain Snappy is Clapton one of kippers hands you and Josh were talking about the science fair and I got home from bike ride on Saturday yeah what about it is going to do the science fair to I'm going to have a fair project with one of those big white boards hold up with pictures and words all over it our parents can help the writing part this is Matthew said come help her Wilson. Glumly and hippopotamus hypothesis I'm going to have a hypothesis Wilson gate can return kippers used when it was great how little kids could be still be so excited about everything and no little kid was ever more excited than camper Wilson sounds a lot less like Greening on Wednesday afternoon when he and his mother kiffer pack pack and snappy set out to walk to mr. Tucker or mrs. Tucker's house for his first day of math tutoring you don't have to walk with me Wilson objective it's only a few blocks I want to go with you today his mother said at least for your first session to make sure you find this is Tucker's house and introduce you to each other he didn't mind so much that his mother was coming with him he minded The Kipper was coming with him Kipper and snappy and pack pack of course. We left at home alone instead Kippur would show off and make Snappy and Peck Peck talk about fractions and this is talking with think about how cute keeper was and how smart and how I'm cute Wilson was and how dumb I don't think I should come think that luckily when mrs. Tucker's house and yellow house with bright blue shutters and hundreds of daffodils In Bloom Wilson's mother told Kippur to wait quietly I want to talk to the math tutor Kippur wind their mother's silent Skipper with the clamps Wilson wasn't sure what a math tutor would look like when she open the door mrs. Tucker turned out to be a small bird like woman Harley taller than Wilson she was as colorful as her house wearing a long purple skirt yellow sweater and red and blue glass bead at least she wasn't wearing earrings shaped like numbers or a sweatshirt with a crazy thought here's a picture of Wilson meeting mrs. Tucker for the first time on the staff their skipper and it's not Wilson's mother presented him to mrs. Tucker handed her check gave him a quick hug and left with Kippur open wished I could go with them come on in a room off for kitchen and it was a table and chairs like the table and chairs in classroom a low bookshelf lots of books probably all boring books about math but then Wilson recognize a couple of the title Charlotte's Web and one of Harry Potter the Harry Potter books so mrs. Tucker said will too much seated at the table your mother said you need needed some help with fractions I guess so she needs help eliminating fractions from the planet in the thought made him smile and this is Tucker said chisme nothing come on tell me you just thought of some something funny if we're going to be spending two hours a week together we might as well share anything funny 2 hours a week I thought he was coming once a week but so far mrs. Tucker was nice so he told her about eliminating fractions from the planet she left all right all fractions are gone if you the world what would there be instead of fractions drawing and hamsters do you have a hamster Wilson told her about pip and swivel great once I had two hamsters name Switzerland this is Tucker pulled out a large sheet of paper in three tubs one of markers one of crayons and one of colored pencils show me some hamsters she said Tommy for hamsters Wilson stared at her he knew his mother wasn't paying the Tucker so that he could sit at mrs. Chuckers house drawing hamsters he can sit drawing hamsters at home for 3 but he wasn't about to complain and beg to do fractions instead I'm pretty soon he was doing fractions sorta pip was 1/4 of a group of four hamsters squiggles and put together 1 2/4 of the group for hamsters 1/4 of the group Switzerland boo-boo together with 2/4 of the group and when the I was over Wilson it's filled for large sheets of paper with hamster drawing and this is Tucker had never once use the words numerator and denominator Wilson had to admit it hadn't been as bad as he thought it would be but new denominator had to becoming mrs. Porter's test wasn't going to be a hamster drawing test for kids passed if they would draw 10 they could draw 10 hamsters and 15 minutes at school they were even starting to add fractions together with Wilson black suit Navy subtracting fractions and multiplying fractions and dividing fractions and Wilson would still be see through do you want to take your picture home or may I keep them mrs. Tucker asked as Wilson stood up to leave Wilson hesitated it would be cool to have the pictures for his room but Lauren Becky both lived nearby Wilson imagine seeing them on their bikes kids go to math tutors had time to ride bikes after school they would see his rolled up sheets of paper and one of them would say those Wilson and he said those are the hamsters tutor and they say what you have a math tutor and Wilson shook his head you can keep them he said so he doesn't want anybody to know he has a math tutor about it
