Welcome to Third Grade!
I am so happy to have your student as a member of Room 5!  I am looking forward to an exciting year of growing and learning. Third grade is a time of many new activities for your student such as learning cursive and mastering their multiplication facts.  We have lots of exciting new curriculum to dive into. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me. I will look forward to meeting all the students on the first day of school, August 28th and parents on Back to School Night, September 12th.
Thank you for supporting your student in learning.

Hope you enjoy!

Dear Room 5 Families,

The second half of the week has been uploaded onto the website.
A few adjustments moving forward that we hope help in your school closure journeys:

First, Jenna Bucklew and I are trying our best to upload the lesson plans PRIOR to Sunday at 9pm for the entire week moving forward. We hope this helps you plan and adjust accordingly.
Next, we are finding that students are having difficulty accessing worksheets under the McGraw Hill Portal, so moving forward we will just be uploading them directly onto our websites now. If you prefer, your child can just do these grammar and spelling exercises directly in their composition notebooks (that may be most eco-friendly and efficient).
Also, I am trying to incorporate more interactions from teacher to student. For example, you will see that in Thursday and Friday’s lesson plans I ask that students send me an email (one is mandatory, one is optional).
Finally, I will try to upload a mid-week video every week (Wednesday afternoon) saying “hello”, checking in, and maybe giving a strategy or tip for the week.
I hope all of this is helpful to you on your school closure journey. I know it has challenging, but we will get through this together.  I am here for you in any capacity possible.

Good morning Room 5 Families,
Here is an overview (day by day) of what we do in class and the assignments for Monday-Wednesday for this week. The remainder of this week’s assignments will be posted on Thursday.

At the END of the week, once the concepts are fully delivered and reviewed, please then separate their paper work into two piles- one showing they do understand the concepts, and the other showing they are struggling/have a minimal grasp on concepts. Although there is no way to re-teach all concepts from the two weeks missed, I will be sure to spend a day or two reviewing and going over what was learned at home.

A few things to note that I believe in and try to implement to the best of my abilities during the school day: I would encourage students go outside and PLAY! That they get lots of “stretch breaks” and “brain breaks” throughout the day. I let students watch Brainpop videos, videos from national geographic kids, or appropriate, kid friendly, subject related YouTube videos. Also, I would encourage a LOT of hands on work: I will articulate this further in the daily plans.

If the students have an older sibling, or a peer they can work with remotely (Office 365 being the approved mode of district communication), I would encourage they work together. There was a child psychologist named Vygotsky who proposed a theory on “zone of proximal development.” This theory essentially states that kids LEARN best when working with a peer who is able to challenge them just slightly and vice versa (that by assisting peers and using teamwork kids are forced to exercising new muscles in the brain). So if your child conversely has a younger sibling and helps decode words, complete an assignment on addition, or complete a phonics lesson, this will deepen their current understanding of the material. This is why we often use “teamwork” and “partners” in class. Unless stated otherwise in the lesson plans, students can work with others.

Although the school closure finds us under unfortunate circumstances, this is a historical opportunity when you think about it. The kids have a community of people that will rally around them to deliver the best possible educational experiences. Let’s work together! If you, of course, ever have any questions, please email me, lowem@pvpusd.net .

Happy New Year!

Hello all!
Thank you to everyone who attended parent teacher conferences, I enjoyed touching base with everyone.  I am looking forward to new adventures in the new year.
The "Polar Express" party yesterday went great! The ornaments came out looking lovely and I'd like to thank all the parents which helped out in organizing and planning the party.
I hope you all have a wonderful break and a happy holiday.  I look forward to seeing you all in the new year!
